Phoenix Festival 2017
The Volkssport Clubs of South Vancouver Island will host the fifth Victoria Volkssport Phoenix Festival on April 21-23, 2017.
We will be in the same great location as in 2015. Be sure to put this in your calendar and register early!
Location: The festival will take place at the Victoria Greek Community Centre at 4648 Elk Lake Drive which is near Beaver Lake, the Howard Johnson Hotel and many bus routes. The Centre is a beautiful, comfortable facility. They will be providing delicious Greek and Italian cuisine throughout the festival - at the Meet and Greet, for the Saturday banquet, and lunch and snacks and cash bar will be available all weekend. Click here to see where it is on Google Maps.
Walks: We will again offer walks from 5 km to 42 km. There will be walks ranging from 5 km to 12 km available all weekend with open start times in four areas known as Broadmead Trails, Lake Trails, Ocean View Trails and Saanich Trails. In addition, on Saturday, walks of 21 km, 32 km and 42 km will be available at Ocean View Trails. On Sunday, a 21 km walk will be available at Saanich Trails. See Schedule and Walks for more details
Transportation: There is a variety of ways to get to Victoria and to the Festival. If you are driving there are several ferries to the island and there is ample parking at the centre. If not driving, many ferries and airlines can bring you to the island and several bus routes bring riders within a few steps of the centre. See Transportation information.
Schedule: The festival site will open at 10 am on Friday morning, April 21. All the 5-12 km trails with open starts will be available at this time. The official 'kick off' will take place at 4 pm Friday with 6 and 10 km Broadmead Trails walks. On Saturday at 10 am there will be optional group walks of the 5 and 10 km Ocean View Trails walks. And on Sunday, the optional group walks will be the 5 and 10 km routes of the Saanich Trails.
Food: Good food has been a key ingredient of past Phoenix Festivals and this tradition will continue in 2017. During the festival, the Greek Community Centre will operate a snack bar with Greek and Italian treats as well as a cash bar. Early morning registration and checkpoints will have the legendary Phoenix Festival home-baked goodies. Friday evening's Meet and Greet will feature a variety of light snacks. Finally, Saturday's banquet will be a real feast. Tickets for the banquet are limited; be sure to sign up for the banquet when you register for the festival. Registering early is the best way to ensure you get a seat Saturday evening!
Hotels: The festival has negotiated great rates with three hotels: Harbour Towers, Accent Inn, and Howard Johnson. All three hotels are located near signature shopping districts and numerous restaurants. The Howard Johnson is virtually next door to the festival venue; the other hotels are an easy drive or bus ride to the venue. See Accommodations.
Pre- and Post-festival Walks: The local Volkssport Clubs will host guided Permanent Trail walks (formerly known as YREs) Thursday evening, Friday morning and Monday morning. See Schedule and Walks for more information
Volunteers: There will be many opportunities for local members to volunteer for the Phoenix Festival.
