Walk the Island Coast to Coast

Monday May 6:
9:00 am Colwood. Walk starts from Juan de Fuca Rec Centre. 5 km route goes down Galloping Goose trail in to Royal Roads trails to Hatley Castle with views over Esquimalt Lagoon and the Olympic Mountains returning along College Drive and through base housing. 10 km route goes along Esquimalt Lagoon and through the old growth forest of Royal Roads
2:00 pm Chemainus Walk starts in parking lot by Visitor Centre and Waterwheel Park. Both the 5 km & 10 km walks zigzag through business & residential streets to view the murals for which Chemainus is famous. The 10 km walk also includes part of the Cowichan River Trail.

Tuesday May 7
10:00 am First half of the walk is 5 km in Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park, 19 km west of Parksville off Hwy 4. Route is along trails on both sides of the river. There is an excellent spot for a picnic lunch in the park otherwise backtrack 10 minutes to the town of Coombs to the restaurant in the back of the Old Country Store, famous for their goats on the roof.
Little Qualicum Falls
2:00 pm Second half of the walk is 5 km in MacMillan Provincial Park Cathedral Grove, 25 km west of Qualicum Beach on Hwy 4. Route is on trails through one of the most accessible stands of giant Douglas fir trees on Vancouver Island.

Wednesday May 8
10:00 am Ucluelet, 100 km west of Port Alberni on Hwy 4 on the west coast of Vancouver Island. The walk begins at the Municipal Building at 200 Main Street. Both routes go on the Wild Pacific Trail on the shoreline of the west coast of Vancouver Island. The trail offers spectacular shoreline panoramas & seaward vistas. The Amphitrite Point Lighthouse can be seen. Not suitable for wheelchairs.

2:00 pm Tofino. The first 5 km route follows a trail to Chesterman Beach & continues on the beach. The Lennard Island Lighthouse can be seen. The Tofino 5 km Heritage walk passes historical buildings & sites in the town of Tofino.
Thursday May 9
10:00 am Qualicum Beach. Qualicum Beach is located 45 km east of Port Alberni on the east coast of Vancouver Island. The walk starts across the road from the Shell Gas Station at the corner of Highway 19A and Memorial Avenue (V9K 1T7). Look for picnic tables beside the water. A scenic walk on wooded trails, along the waterfront & through the town of Qualicum Beach.
2:00 pm Parksville, 11 km south of Qualicum Beach on Hwy 19A. Start point is Tigh Na Mara Resort Gift Shop, 1155 Resort Drive V9P 2E3. A lovely walk on roads & trails to Englishman River Estuary & along the shoreline through Rathtrevor Provincial Park.

Friday May 10
10:00 am Westwood Lake The 6 km route goes on trails in Westwood Lake Park while the 10 km route goes into Morrell Nature Sanctuary as well as around Westwood Lake.
2:00 pm Downtown Nanaimo. The 5 km route goes through downtown Nanaimo & along the harbour front; the 10 km route goes through Bowen Park & along Nanaimo's harbour-front walkway.
