Victoria,
British
Columbia
Welcome to Victoria - the "City of Gardens". This intimate,
sophisticated
seaside
City is the vacation
capital of Canada and the premiere tourist spot in the
Pacific
Northwest.
Victoria is situated on
the southern tip of Vancouver
Island and sparkles in one of
Canada's mildest climates. This
area is the sunniest spot in the province and the gentlest in the country in
terms of climate,
environment, and lifestyle. Victoria's unique character is deeply rooted in its 150-year history
-- a history full of colourful people and
fascinating
tales. The city's British colonial heritage is still very much in evidence, but
contemporary Victoria has a distinctly Pacific northwest flavour. Today,
Victoria is best known as the capital city of
British Columbia, and as a world-renowned tourism
destination. One
of the most visitor-friendly cities anywhere, Victoria is also one of Canada's favourite places to call home.
Greater
Victoria and its outlying areas now have a
population of
300,000, and the one-time colonial outpost is alive with cosmopolitan dining,
superb shopping, a colourful nightlife and a full complement of cultural
offerings.
Vancouver Island and the Victoria region are served by an excellent
transportation
network. Ferries
carrying passengers, automobiles, trucks and trailers make more than 100
crossings to and from the mainland daily, linking motorists to
Vancouver to the east, Seattle
to the south and Prince
Rupert and
Alaska to the north. The network also includes an airport,
helicopter and seaplane services, buses, and passenger train service.

attending the Victoria Volkssport Phoenix Festival. Details will be posted here
after arrangements have been finalised. Note that Traveller’s Inn Hotels, with
whom we made special arrangements last time, have gone into bankrupcy and most
of their hotels are now closed.
Esquimalt
Although
Esquimalt began as an agricultural settlement, little remains of
that
heritage today. The fledgling naval base of 1865 has grown to become the
largest employer in the region, and the original townsite has disappeared inside
the boundaries of the Canadian Forces Base. Nevertheless,
Esquimalt today has a healthy mix of commercial, residential and
industrial development, and open space is retained through a network of pleasant
parks and beaches. The municipality’s 17,000 residents enjoy a variety of
amenities, including fine schools, sports and recreation
facilities and a modern Library and Archives. Perhaps because of its
location
"beyond the bridge" to Victoria, Esquimalt
maintains a village atmosphere, and the municipality’s small size means
that no home
is very far from the sea shore. Its beautiful parks and
private
gardens have won recognition in national
garden competitions in 1996 and 1997.
